Cancer is a disease that for its large consequences, is involved in thousands of investigations. Currently, it has been proven that obesity and cancer in women are closely associated. A woman or a man who suffers from obesity is someone who has more fat than adequate, accumulated or poorly distributed in the body.
According to various studies, it has been determined that the relationship between obesity and cancer in women is really important, since the probabilities of suffering from different types of cancer such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, thyroid cancer, gallbladder cancer, among others, increase when the woman is overweight.
In 2002, the International Agency for Research on Cancer verified, based on European foundations, and announced that obesity collaborates in the formation of more than 1/3 of the known cases of cancer, especially those of the esophagus and endometrium, and in ¼ of the cases of kidney cancer.
In fact, studies carried out over a period of 10 years, collecting data from 54,446 individuals from seven different independent communities, between the ages of 35 and 79, show that obesity increases the probability by 12 times in women.
Food is much more important than we think, so we must pay attention much. In fact, at some other time, we have talked about how important the consumption of some foods is to prevent breast cancer.
How obesity influences cancer
Scientists are still studying the answers to solve cancer. But all the data obtained according to the factors used are strongly related to the fact that the fat stored in adipose tissue is highly metabolic. It used to be believed that fat tissue only served to store fat passively. However, studies have shown that this tissue pumps a large number of hormones, signalling molecules, and growth factors. All this can act on the behaviour of the other cells of the organism.
The more hormones, the greater the chances of cancer
The molecules that have been studied are mostly not the cause of cancer, but they promote it. They don’t make the mutations that turn normal cells into cancer cells, but they feed them as they grow and contribute to the proliferation of malignant cells.
The scientists study that one of the ways that can lead to obese women get cancer is linked to estrogen. This is a hormone that greatly favours the development of endometrial and breast cancer. In women who have gone through menopause, the levels of this hormone circulating in the blood are decreased rapidly when the ovaries stop producing it. But it turns out that adipose tissue produces estrogen, via a cellular pathway that has an enzyme called aromatase. In fact, aromatase inhibitors are used in several breast cancer treatments for their control. The estrogen hormone, which is produced by excess fat, is capable of feeding cancer cells that express receptors for estrogen.
Other factors that contribute to a woman suffering from cancer
On the other hand, it is not the only estrogen that is responsible. Many times when a person suffers from obesity, this is accompanied by metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. In these cases, the body’s cells stop responding to the hormone insulin. Which, as a consequence, accumulates glucose in the blood. This, in turn, causes the body to increase insulin production, and in some types of cancer, insulin can make it develop faster.
That is why serious measures must be taken to control obesity in the population, demonstrating that it is not only about physical appearance, but involves enormous damage to the body. It is important to understand that obesity and cancer in women are closely related.
