5 tips to take care of yourself if you have hypothyroidism
The thyroid gland, located in the neck, fulfils a series of regulatory functions in the body. However, when this gland does not produce enough thyroxine, hypothyroidism appears. In which weight swing is one of its most common symptoms.

1. Eat foods rich in iodine
In addition to pharmacological treatments, the consumption of certain foods has been shown to help regulate the thyroid gland. This is the case of the so-called hyperthyroid foods, which are rich in iodine and activate the production of thyroid hormones.
Vegetables with high iodine content are: garlic, peas, tomatoes, and beans. Legumes, especially lentils, are also rich in this mineral, as are nuts and mango.
Also, to get an adequate supply of iodine, it is recommended to take at least four servings a week of fish or shellfish that comes from the sea, since 100 grams of these foods contain between 150 and 300 micrograms of iodine.
These foods help the thyroid gland to function better. And they favour the activation of the metabolism, that is, it will stop being so slow and prevent you from gaining weight so easily.
2. Ask if you should eliminate gluten from your diet
More and more nutritionists and experts point to the exclusion of some food groups to control hypothyroidism, such as gluten. However, before making this decision, don’t forget to check with your endocrine about the possibility of eliminating gluten from your diet.
3. Say goodbye to goitrogenic foods
When the thyroid gland enlarges, goiter appears. Which can sometimes be a symptom of hypothyroidism. Therefore, it is necessary to remove from the diet all those foods that contribute to the enlargement of this gland.
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale or cabbage), and also soy and all its derivatives, such as millet, have a negative effect on the thyroid gland, especially if consumed raw.
4. Don’t forget about selenium and zinc
In addition to iodine, there are other friendly minerals of the thyroid gland. These are, above all, selenium and zinc. You can ensure a correct dose of these minerals through food supplements, but you can also resort to foods that contain them.
Bluefish, spinach, walnuts, and legumes are foods rich in selenium. And seafood, chicken, nuts and veal are very healthy and rich in zinc.
5. Reduce consumption of ultra-processed foods
Foods called ultra-processed, are loaded with sugars and trans fats, substances that affect the body in a very negative way.
If you suffer from hypothyroidism, don’t hesitate to substitute ultra-processed foods for foods rich in protein, such as lean meat, fish, or eggs. Also, don’t forget to eat foods that are full of healthy fats, such as olive oil, nuts or the wonderful avocado.
